Today is the fast of Gedalia, a little-known and little-observed holiday that nevertheless should be considered more prominently today. Gedalia was the Israelite king appointed by the king of Babylon during the exile, which, by the way, God ordained because of the people Israel’s sins. This is not pleasant, but stay with me. Gedalia was murdered by Jewish extremists, zealots very much like those who murdered Shira Banki during the Jerusalem Pride Parade, who murdered tiny Ali Dawabshe the next day, and who murdered Yitzhak Rabin years ago.
If you won’t fast for Gedalia, fast for Rabin. If you won’t fast for Rabin, fast for Banki. If you won’t fast for Banki, fast for Dawabsheh. Perhaps the fast of Gedalia should be reimagined as a day against Jewish extremism.
If what matters to you is not a fast of self-denial but a fast of making change, then please make this a day to think about an end to these murders, and to take upon ourselves the responsibility to do something about them. That would truly be a day for Gedalia. On the other hand, whoever thinks the end of days will come before the end of murders, they are part of the problem.
היום תענית גדליה, חג אינו ידוע או שמור שאף על פי כן זוכה יותר התחשבות היום. גדליה היה מלך ישראל שמלך בבל שם על הכסא אחרי התחלת הגלות, אשר, דרך אגב, אלוהים ציוה בגלל חטאותם של העם. זה לא נעים אבל תישארו איתי. גדליה הוא נפל ברצח על ידי קיצוניים יהודיים, קנאיים ממש כמו הם שרצחו את שירה בנקי בתוך מצעד הגאווה בירושלים, שרצחו את עלי דוואבשה, שרצחו את רבין.
אם לא תצומו לגדליה, תצמו לבנקי. אם לא לבנקי אז תצומו לדוואבשה התינוק התמים. אם לא לדוואבשה את תצומו לרבין שלא היה המנהיג הראשון היהודי להיות להירצח על ידי יהודיים. ואם לא תצומו מאוכל, אז תעשו בבקשה את היום יום התחשבות קץ רצח ולקחת עלינו את האחריות לעשות משהו נגד זה. מי שחושב שקץ הימים יבוא לפני קץ הרצח, הוא חלק מהבעיה
