In his 1917 collection of puzzles, Amusements in Mathematics Tree-planting puzzles, English author and mathematician Henry Ernest Dudeney he refers to Sir Isaac Newton’s tree-planting puzzle, which he calls “the most familiar example” of a lines and nodes puzzler:
