Mullah Aktar Mansour, who replaced Mullah Omar as Taliban leader after Omar’s death from tuberculosis in 2013, was killed today by a U.S. drone strike. Omar founded the Taliban, and the U.S. put a $25 million bounty on his head after the 9/11 attacks. Mansour was Omar’s top deputy and had been the de facto leader for years. He was spotted in a vehicle near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. U.S. officials said it may take several days to assess the site, but it’s “likely” that Mansour is dead.
