Buying and Selling Houses

Preston David 2 2David Preston

Crackerbox house in my neighborhood. 1200 sq feet in the main building, plus another room attached to the garage. Boring design. No-frills remo.
.
Sold for $525,000 during the open house. Probably more if it sold that fast.
.
This is nuts. If I had to re-purchase the house I’m living in now, there’s no way I could do it. And I wouldn’t buy it for no half a million even if I had the money. Instead, I’d buy a nice big house in Kansas, and if I ever got to missing Seattle that bad, I’d just fly out here and stay in a hotel. Get it out of my system.
.
$500k to live in a glorified shack? Nope. Don’t think so.

The buyer isn’t paying $525k for that shack, he’s paying $525k (or, more likely, $575k or thereabouts) for access to a high-paying tech job. You can’t work in this city without a place to live in this city. Seattle has lots of great jobs, but no housing for the influx of people who covet them. I couldn’t buy my shack today either, but fortunately I don’t have to, because it’s paid off and my only housing costs are taxes, utilities, and insurance.
