The City of Cleveland has agreed to pay the family of Tamir Rice, 12, who was gunned down by an incompetent rookie police officer, two payments of $3 million each to settle their civil suit against the city. Rice was playing with a toy gun in a public park when he was killed by a trigger-happy cop who had recently been sacked by another police department as “unfit for duty” the moment he hopped out of his patrol car. Although a judge found probable cause to charge the cop with murder, and his partner with negligent homicide, a grand jury declined to indict either cop, and neither will face criminal charges. The city ought to take the settlement out of their pay, or at least their pensions, but of course you know that won’t happen. Innocent taxpayers will get stuck with the bill. Meanwhile, so far as I know, both of these cops are still on the force and working the streets, which presents a clear and present danger to the citizens of Cleveland. I’m sure glad I don’t live there. (Read story here.)
