Dispute over South Carolina’s confederate flag turns physical

A brawl erupted at the confederate flag display on South Carolina’s capitol grounds Monday evening, S.C.-Confederate-flagwith opposing demonstrators trading punches, but there were no serious injuries, media sources report. The melee started when a convoy of vehicles displaying confederate flags went to the monument to confront anti-flag demonstrators and someone snatched a flag off one of the vehicles. CBS News says there are sufficient votes in the South Carolina legislature to remove the flag that has flown at the statehouse since the 1960s.

Photo: Symbol of southern pride, or southern racism? The confederate flag has different meanings for different people. When I see it displayed I think “redneck,” “hick,” and “yahoo,” and peg that person as a racist. Stereotyping? Sure. But isn’t racism itself stereotyping with a vengeance?
