Federal law bars convicted felons from possessing guns. Until now, the government has interpreted that statute to mean a person, upon conviction of a felony, effectively forfeits any guns he owns to the government. But the Supreme Court unanimously ruled today that felons have a right to sell or give their guns to a third party provided the transfer isn’t a subterfuge to give the felon continued access to the guns.
