Besides past UW problems of: 1) contracted search firms’ secret processes, and 2) a lack of multiple candidates to choose from, what steps can the Regents take to make faculty, staff and students’ input into our next president’s search process both meaningful and more concrete? How can shared governance be increased in greater depth, beyond sending messages to a catch-all email account or voicing opinions withoutthe requirement of replies at open forums?Furthermore, I have little faith in the ability of the Regents’ sub-committee — whose super-majority includes a tech/legal family millionaire/accountant, industry PR executive, and technology entrepreneur — to choose a candidate that is not similarly neoliberal and hyper-corporate.
