A massive explosion has been reported in Donestk, Web sites in Kiev reported this as an unusually large explosion in an arms depot. . Online media outlets are suggesting this was a nuclear weapon that accidentally triggered itself, releasing fissile material .
More details today suggest that this was a chemical plant, possibly a weapons depot or factory, outside the separatist stronghold of Donetsk. Rebels said the plant was hit by government shelling.
Whatever exploded it frightened the people of Donetsk who have long feared an escalation in the size of weapons being used.
Russia continues to deny supplying the rebels with either troops or heavy weapons, despite the sheer amount of new heavy weapons in eastern Ukraine. While this was likely not a nuclear weapon, the fear is realistic given that Russia military doctrine supports the use of small nukes as battlefield weapons.
