Fraternities trash Michigan resorts

Three fraternities from the University of Michigan vandalized two ski resorts in northern Michigan over the weekend. Police escorted the students off the property, but no criminal charges have been filed. The university and the frats’ national organizations are investigating; presumably the local chapters and guilty individuals will get the usual slap-on-wrist sanctions. I suspect insurance companies, not the perpetrators, will pay for the damage.

I wanted nothing to do with fraternities when I was in college. I was a working student trying to make grades and get into law school. I didn’t have the time or inclination for fraternity hijinks. And they aren’t my kind of people.

I’m prejudiced against the “Greek” system, but it’s not an irrational bias, it’s earned. I think of “frat boys” as irresponsible drunken spoiled brats partying on their parents’ dime, and a malignant occupying army in the unfortunate neighborhoods bordering campuses. Of the several colleges I attended, I was happiest at the one that had no fraternities or sororities.

Frat brats tend to come from the upper crust, and it’s disheartening to realize this inferior subspecies is destined to inherit wealth and power, and exercise sway over the rest of us. They’re our future bosses. Which may help explain why America is going down the tubes.
