Today we know from modern genetics that that the Khoe-San are the most direct descendants of the first true human .. people who could talk, show each other how to make complex tools, and invent the myths that we inherit today as our religions.
Let me explain with one more bit of coolness. “we” … if we means the modern human species, anatomically modern humans … may be 
100,000 years or more older then the expansion that seems to tie the earliest complex language … as indicated by symbolic marks, rapid tool development, and linguistic studies to when complex speech first appeared.
So, someplace in Africa, about 70,000 to 100,000 years ago “we” changed from pretty nice looking but inarticulate humans to folks who could speak in complex sentences, invent myths and tell others how to make tools. Remember this was BEFORE written languages and even before the Internet! It also happened before we migrated to the other continents, bred within our migrating tribes and developed the features that distinguish what we now call human “races.” All humans, whether you call them “races” or breeds, Aryans or Han. Bantu or Zulu .. all of us have a special connection to the Khoe-San .
Since the ability to speak is now part of our genome, all of our languages must trace back to the Khoe-San as well. Imagine being among the first humans who could tell other humans the story of your adventures or show another human how to paint a picture? How did we change so we could speak? No one knows for sure but genetic evidence suggests that this initial group of talkers was small .. maybe 2000!
As a Jew, an atheist and a scientist THAT EVENT seems to me to be as wonderful as the story in Genesis. Imagine if Genesis is a dimly seen record of that event?
I dream of someone making a discovery, say of a carved sheet of potters clay, recording the stories of those 2000 folks .. the ancestors of us all!
