Memories of The South

facts about slavery

Many slave owners forced enslaved women to continue working even when they became pregnant. Some enslaved women had to keep working until they were less than a week away from giving birth and were required to return to the field shortly after giving birth.

I was born on a sharecropping farm in Missouri in 1950 and share cropper mothers were still working while pregnant and carrying the baby to the fields.
