Chris Hughes, the owner, publisher, and editor-in-chief since 2012, is a young guy (age 31) who made his bones (~$850 million) by teaming up with college buddy Mark Zuckerberg to start Facebook. He has good liberal political credentials, including working for Obama’s campaign, so I don’t think he’s out to sabotage a storied liberal print mouthpiece. He bought the magazine to save it. The recent mass departure of staff raises flags, but you can’t really blame Hughes for experimenting with a new business and format model, as you can’t expect him to subsidize a money-losing print publication out of his personal fortune forever. I’m willing to be patient for a while and see where he takes NR. A changed NR is much better than no NR, assuming it continues to be a forum for liberal thought on public issues.
Roger, what a coward you are!
If this story were about Murdoch or Koch you would take a very different tenor.
I’m especially disappointed because I know that you worked as a journalist. The argument that there is something new is a convenient one that is leading to the loss of our ability to have sensible discussions.
Just look at the situation here in Seattle. We no longer have any longform media. In the days when you were journalist, someone would have made money off of exposing the problems with big Bertha. Today, where would you put such a story!
This guy may be just a kid with a plaything, but hoping that such a kid will find something good to do with his toy seems to me to be naïve.
So all rich kids are just ogres out to milk dying cows for the last drop? Jeff Bezos comes to mind in that respect, but he’s not a kid anymore, nor is he very liberal.
Hunhh?? Of course there are rich kids who are no worse than other kids. The rich kids have IQs at least equal to the IQs of children of slaves. Being rich does not mean you are are not eligible to be a pro basketball player or the publisher of Forbes.
