Free Speech in Seattle Public Schools

Seattle Teacher Reinstated After Having His Course Censored

Please check out the fresh-off-the-press website: citizenshipandsocialjustice.com

It is named after the course the district tried to squash so that we never forget what happened—not just the nonsensical, heavy-handed actions of the district but, more importantly, the courageous response of The Center School and Seattle communities, a response for which I will always be profoundly grateful.

The website documents what I call the Race Curriculum Controversy, but it is also meant to connect those working for social justice. Over the course of the struggle, the district did its best to isolate and silence me. It is only because of the support of the community that I survived that experience intact. Not every educator or activist is so lucky. In fact, several have approached me after telling the story with similar stories of their own. Through the website, those working for social justice will have one more place to go to seek support and build solidarity.
Citizenship and Social Justice is also a resource on current social justice issues, events, new writings, and updates on my continually evolving case.
Of course, it is a work in progress, but it is ready enough to be put out there. I would greatly appreciate if you could visit and like or follow or whatever it.

Thank you!

It is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.”–James Baldwin
