Roots of Protests

Black Panther Fred Hampton

Black Panther Fred Hampton

I was a Freshman and President and founder of the BSU at Lake Michigan Jr. College in Benton Harbor Michigan when this went down. We were 90 miles from Chicago and it felt like we were all under siege, Benton Harbor was just like Ferguson 80% Black and no political power but we changed that in 1970 with the help of the Hatcher team from Gary, Indiana, and saw that white business community abandon the city, just like they did in Gary. I was 19 and within a year the police made it clear that if I stayed in Michigan I would die so I was a Ford Foundation Scholar who’s Mother told him to leave the state and I ended up here.  Charlie James
