Raise Your Hand If You Love Your Capitalist Health Care

Of course, it’s a trick question, because no one in America has capitalist health care.  Capitalism assumes free markets, competition, and free choice.  None of those things exist in American health care.

Just ask Megan Rothbauer.  She was unconscious when an ambulance crew took her to an out-of-network hospital, instead of an in-network hospital three blocks away.   That cost her tens of thousands of dollars.  There’s no question she received excellent care at the out-of-network hospital; they saved her life.  But she’s now medically bankrupt.

Even if you’re not in a coma, you can’t comparison shop for health care.  Why?  Because providers don’t disclose their charges.  And you don’t even know what goods and services you’re buying.  They, not you, decide what will be provided.  Hey, people, let’s stop pretending we have free-market health care in this country; that’s nonsense.

Now let me ask you this:  When it comes to buying a product that may cost a million dollars or more, who do you trust more to look after your financial health, the government — your government, run by people you elected — or a for-profit corporation?

I dunno about you, but gimme my Medicare.  Roger Rabbit icon
