In 2010, the North Carolina GOP defeated a Democratic state legislator with a campaign flyer featuring mugshots of two black death row inmates and warning voters these “killers” might be “moving into your neighborhood sometime soon” because the legislator had “voted to allow activist judges to weaken the sentence of death row inmates.”
One of these inmates, Henry McCollum, 50, walked out of prison a free man last week after DNA evidence proved the confession police coerced from him over 30 years ago, when he was only a 19-year-old kid without an attorney, wasn’t worth used toilet paper.
As for the North Carolina GOP … oops. They’d demonized an innocent man and the legal process that freed him. Which makes them look darn stupid.
