Star UConn Husky player Shabazz Napier may have given Husky fans here at the UW something to discuss besides a basketball victory.
Following the Huskies’ NCAA win of BOTH the male and the females championships, these Huskies (from UConn) are airing the dirty underside of the life of the student athlete, Worth a read!
“In the locker room after the game, some Connecticut players pointed out the irony of the NCAA’s touting of academics while allowing so much missed class time. UConn’s team left its campus on Wednesday of last week to prepare for a game on Saturday. Other players described academic schedules apparently consisting of just two classes a week.”
Especially disturbing to me were the comment by Warde J. Manuel, the UConn athletic director. The Chronicle says: Mr. Manuel also helped address issues of athletes failing their academic programs by moving the academic-support unit from reporting to the Provost to being under his purview. The athletic director now says that he meeting regularly with problem students leys set higher academic expectations. Mr. Mayer says”It’s not about being eligible,” he said. “It’s about being prepared for the next phase of life.”
