BUCHENWALD 28: A response from my brother

A letter from my brother, Hugh Schwartz.

Hugh sent me this email but I see it as more a comment on posts here on TA.  The mien is gentler than a lot of his emails, often they are filled with obscenities and invectives, but it does serve the purpose of letting him give his point of view.

I have redacted abusive text directed at my children for obvious reasons.

By the way, I so deny being miserable.

SMS

Dear Steve:

I see you are writing even more trash on your website. You just can’t stop can you? Even Roger Rabbit, your staunch supporter criticized you for tieing your S Carolina comments to the the family feud. I would think even for someone as self-centered as you this would raise a red flag. Why not pick on Massachusetts? They burned witches there and your favorite relative lives there with her her boyfriend? How about Virginia? They supported slavery. Jefferson so revered was a slave owner. In fact you should move out of the US entirely since our federal laws once considered blacks to be 2/3 of man and assigned no rights to women at all.
Oh, and doesn’t your daughter live in Redacted- not exactly the cradle of jewish thought. Redacted Ever wonder why they moved almost half way around the world from YOU? It wasn’t for their careers or to bring up Redacted  in a good jewish environment. That is for sure.
You are a complete jerk. Just because you are miserable, you think it gives you the right to make everyone else miserable as well. Believe it or not, trying to hurt people that actually cared about you is a terrible strategy.

Massachusetts didn’t burn witches to the best of my knowledge. First, they didn’t have any witches, so they used townspeople instead. Second, they didn’t burn them, they hanged them. I’m not trying to defend Massachusetts here. What people in Massachusetts did 320 years ago still sucks.

I guess by Bill’s standards. slavery, breeding of humans, secession, the holocaust, Pol Pot, Johnsonville, the cultural revolution and the crusades were are all OK since Boston had witch trials and McCarthy came from Wisconsin.

The odd thing her is not that Bill is offended, since I do mention him as a person who chose to live there (along with Boeing) but that he seems not to be able to respond by telling us good things about the place or even why he chose to live there. Even Boeing admits it did this so it could get away from the union.

As someone who lives in a more civilized state that celebrates American values of opportunity and equality, I am not sure that exporting jobs to South Carolina is all that much better than exporting them to China.

I have sent SMS an e-mail as follows:

“your blogpost where you reproduced Hugh’s e-mail (http://handbill.us/?p=29875) now contains a comment from you (reproduced immediately below) that makes no sense, is scurrilous in the extreme, and which I insist must be immediately deleted.

It is bizarre that you continue to unnecessarily inflame the “family feud” by comments such as this, and certainly it does absolutely nothing towards somehow reconciling the family differences. Your father would be rolling over in the grave if he saw this.”

    Bill.

Your grammar here is confusing since the quite you refer to appears to be of your own etx.

As for inflammation, the posts about Buchenwald are intended to expose what I believe is a tragic action that is destroying a part of the heritage of Buchenwald … a part that is different from the focus on our people as victims and focuses on my Dad’s role as one of the Jews who did tnings to fight the Nazis. We are now 18 days before the time he entered the camp and the only reason those pictures are rotting is Hugh and Stephs insistence on keeping them in that safe. As You well know I have advocated for almost six years that we work together on his heritage and for almost three years have advocated that the materials be properly preserved and placed in an institution that would make them publically available. Anything else is a shanda that not only my father but my mother and grandparents would have seen as a yiddische shanda.

Huh? I’m confusing? How about this: “Your grammar here is confusing since the quite you refer to appears to be of your own etx.”

Can I guess about your standards, based on your scurrilous comment (above) that you evidently are refusing to take down. You claim “by Bill’s standards. slavery, breeding of humans, secession, the holocaust, Pol Pot, Johnsonville, the cultural revolution and the crusades were are all OK ” If I’m allowed to guess, I would guess that “by Steve’s standards, refusing to return WWII materials to Hugh that he has in Seattle (despite having signed an agreement to do so), refusing to sign a Deed of Gift to donate the WWII materials, posting family e-mails without permission, reproducing family photographs without permission, repeatedly plagiarizing from other websites, lying about how he came into possession of the WWII materials and family photographs, refusing to share family photographs with his sibs except on his bizarre terms, and misrepresenting South Carolina’s Jewish heritage are are all OK ” Not quite up to the standards of me and Pol Pot, but all true (unlike the b*llsh*t Steve slings at his family).

You, not I, argues that burning witches in Salem under the pilgrims was the equivalent of slavery, forced breeding, racial extermination of indigenous people, starting the civlil war, Jium crow and segregated BBQ in your state.

Your other comments make no sense since you know I long ago agreed to gifting the materials so they would be available to all.

  9. William Quick #
    9

I don’t make any sense? You should talk!

    (1) I have never mentioned Salem or witches.

    (2) As far as I know, you have NOT agreed to returning the WWII materials that you have in Seattle — you wriggle around that by discussing the WWII materials that the Estate’s attorneys have safely secured, but never mention when you will send the Seattle WWII material to Hugh as you agreed to do in an agreement that you signed. And you have put conditions on the donation that were not in the Agreement you signed (e.g., that they would be preserved by the Estate rather than by the recipient organization).

    (3) Your vicious attacks on the state where your sister and I live (that Jews founded the KKK in Charleston, that BBQ is segregated, and that the present residents of the state are somehow responsible for the actions of people over a hundred years ago) are simply reprehensible. BTW, if you ever do visit Charleston, despite your statement that “I have relatives who chose to live there but I doubt I would ever want to visit their home”, be sure to visit our synagogue, KKBE, founded in 1749, and the the Sylvia Vlosky Yaschik Jewish Studies Center at the College of Charleston (which has a Jewish Studies Major).

The civil war ended well over a hundred years ago BUT the symbol of slavery, the “stars and bars” still flies in front of your state house and today Charleston celebrates the South’s valiant defense against the North. Sadly, it is also true that the same reform shul in Charleston you referred to was the source of the Scottish Rite and its contributions to the KKK ideology.

As for segregated BBQ, WE passed a lw banning that. Otherwise it would still be there.

My argument with SC, BTW, is hardly that current folks should pay reparations but that SC CELEBRATES its horrid history.

I repeat: As far as I know, you have NOT agreed to returning the WWII materials that you have in Seattle — you wriggle around that by discussing the WWII materials that the Estate’s attorneys have safely secured, but never mention when you will send the Seattle WWII material to Hugh as you agreed to do in an agreement that you signed. And you have put conditions on the donation that were not in the Agreement you signed (e.g., that they would be preserved by the Estate rather than by the recipient organization). Somehow, you keep evading answering these issues, and would rather mislead your readers into thinking I have discussed witches and that I support Pol Pot. You are f*cking crazy.

Dr. Quick, as you know, the assertions you are making are likely to come to litigation. The side you are on is represented by Mr. Joseph Scully and you really need ot communicate your opinions either to him or to the two executors of the estate .. Hugh Schwartz and Martin Miasserian.

  13. William Quick #
    13

The only reason it might come to litigation is best evidenced by a statement by your attorney: “Here are our options: Accept what Stephen has proposed to end this saga or I will initiate two court actions” You are totally unwilling to negotiate; you have repeatedly made it clear that it’s “Steve’s way or the highway”

You could end this entire family mess if you chose to do so. But your mule-headed stubborness and hatred of your father and your sibs prohibit you from thinking clearly.

  14. theaveeditor #
    14

    sighhhh.

Bill knows very well that there have been multiple offers to negotiate.

  15. Roger Rabbit #

Negotiation is for sissies! This should be settled with water balloons at ten paces. No fair pissing in the balloons.

  16. William Quick #

Yes, there have been “multiple offers to negotiate” — by his sibs. But SMS always falls back on a statement to “read the letter” — the one where his attorney wrote: “Here are our options: Accept what Stephen has proposed to end this saga or I will initiate two court actions”

Again, I point out that SMS could end the family mess if he chose to do so, by negotiating in good faith. For instance, he could ship the WWII materials he’s holding in Seattle to his brother Hugh, as he agreed to do previously. For instance, he could tell his lawyer to lay off the threats to litigate. For instance, he could agree to sign the Deed of Gift as his sibs have repeatedly asked him to do. And he could share the family photos that he has surreptitiously stolen and has sequestered in Seattle.

(Hey, that sounds like a catchy title for a movie: “Sequestered in Seattle”!)
