UW’s Young: Reasonable solution needed to ‘cliff’

I HIGHLY recommend this piece in Crosscut for two reasons:

1. It is good to see something in Brewster’s Progeny (David is now sort of out of it) that is more substantial than antiquarian comments on politics or charming reviews of the latest Seattle Opera production (though I do go to Crosscut for that stuff).

2. Aside from being the first impressive intellectual to head the UW in a very long time, President Young is a potential potent influence in the Republican party.  He is a rare bird … a thoughtful, constructive, patriotic member of the rational remnant of the Republicans.

The sad thing is that I suspect that this piece was not written by Young but by one of the crew of flacks around him who seem to have as their main job being sure that our administration and faculty never exhibit the leadership the Washington public should expect of its greatest intellectual resource.

Speaking as one of his loyal subjects, I for one would love to hear Mr. Young speak out on why we need a two party system and on the role rational Republicans should play in our system.
