The Education Of A Republican
Whatever else it is, the Republican Party certainly cannot claim to be an example of philosophical consistency. Gov. Christopher Christie may be learning that lesson. During the campaign Christie state of New Jersey was struck by Hurricane Sandy. FEMA came to the rescue, coordinating the kinds of resources only the federal government has. The pictures of the governor with Pres. Obama no doubt undermined Romney’s presidential campaign.
Now the governor is getting another lesson in the importance of big government. This time, however, it is Christie playing the role of Obama. The city of Camden is bankrupt. In the Republican world, bankruptcy is a good thing. The city, as if it were some business, should simply restructure and return better than ever. It seems that the Republican recipe does not work so well when applied to government. Layoffs in the Camden Police Department have created an environment all too similar to the movie “Clockwork Orange.”
Now it seems that the only solution to Camden’s dilemma is for Gov. Christie and big government to step in! They are replacing the bankrupt local police force with a new police force from the county! It appears that big government can solve the problems of small government.
Of course, there is controversy in Camden. The remaining Camden police force is being disbanded. This means many police officers, after serving most of their lives on the mean streets of this town as well as veterans who dis National Guard Duty in Afghanistan, may see their pensions greatly diminished. There is also controversy over whether the new police force will save money by using a larger number of young, Wes are paid, officers. The conservative point of view is that the police officers in Camden were overpaid because the local management lacked the big government skills to negotiate a cheaper contract.
All of this gives me an idea. As President Romney Obama reshuffles his Cabinet, wouldn’t Chris Christie make an outstanding Secretary for Housing and Urban Development?
