Last night’s debate between Elizabeth Warren and Scott Brown can be summed up in one phrase:
“I think character is important. … as you can see, she’s not (Native American).” Scott Warren
As a Jew, I am all too familiar with the faux complement “Funny you do not look Jewish.” Brown’s attempt at racism is all too typical of the not-so-subtle racism of the Republican Party.
As for the debate itself, both candidates seem well-trained in staying on task. Catch phrases were repeated over and over again. For her part, Elizabeth Warren repeatedly pointed out that Brown’s votes in Congress were focused on tax breaks for the wealthy . This was a lost opportunity for Warren to tie Mr. Brown to the sinking ship of Mitt Romney and his 47%ism.
As for Brown, he seemed to want to decorate Warren with the image of being a doctrinaire liberal. Maybe that is related to his desire to demean her heritage… Somehow confounding his view that she is pretending to be a Native American with his view that she has a socialist point of view?
