Ryanomics: Support for Science

The Scientist reports that Paul Ryan supports federal finding for basic research, except  when science conflicts with ideology …..

The good news is that Paul Ryan states that he supports  increasing funding for basic science.

In 2000, Representative Ryan opined that biomedical research was a good thing, as long as the scientists obeyed the rules,  “One of the most important and proper roles of the Federal Government is in the funding of basic research, basic research to improve the health and welfare of our people.” Of course Mr. Ryan opposes embryonic stem cell research, repeatedly voting in favor of banning federal funding for this kind of research.

One assumes he would also oppose research on other subjects where Mr. Ryan finds truth inconvenient.

A good example is climate research.  The Scientist reports that “Ryan supports the idea of reliable renewable energy sources, but thinks federal funding is not the way to go, repeatedly arguing that government should not “pick winners and losers.” He consistently voted against federal funding for energy initiatives such as research into wind and solar energy and improving the design of nuclear and “clean coal” plants.”  One can only imagine how Mr. Ryan would feel if the NIH tried to determine the effects of fracking on the composition of drinking water.   Of course, Mr. Ryan opposed  opposed a proposed  amendment that would have recognized the role of humans in  climate change” and said that t the cap-and-trade initiative bill was ” not about science, it’s not about costs and benefits; it’s about ideology.”
