San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro gave a great speech opening night at the Democratic Convention. Some of it was even in Spanish!
Spanish? Castro’s Mom spoke Spanish but she insisted that no Spanish be used at home as she was raising the twin boys!
So, as Julian (now 37 years old!) rose in politics, he needed to learn … Spanish! Who did he turn to? An aide recommended a woman from his synagogue, Marta Bronstein! “Early in his administration, Castro assigned his chief of staff, Robbie Greenblum—a Jewish lawyer from the border town of Laredo whose own Spanish is impeccable—to discreetly find him a tutor. Rosie Castro’s son is now being taught Spanish by a woman named Marta Bronstein. Greenblum met her in shul.”
