30,000 Hasidic Jews from around the world are expected in Uman, Ukraine  this week to celebrate Rosh Hashana at the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav.  Rabbi Nachman  died in 1810.  During his  lifetime, thousands of Hasidim traveled to be with him for  Rosh Hashanas. On the last Rosh Hashana of his life, Rebbe Nachman stressed to his followers the importance of being with him for that holiday in particular and an annual Rosh Hashana pilgrimage to his gravesite began.

This year, however,  Uman residents have complained that the pilgrims treat them disrespectfully. and supporters of the nationalist party Svoboda, or Liberty, demanded that Hasidic Jews not be allowed to gather.  Protesters at the rally shouted “Ukraine for Ukrainians.”
