June Weddings … and my in-state tuition discount

I know a few couples who have tied the knot earlier than planned, for reasons greater than love alone — usually, the need for health insurance or visa woes.

But here’s a reason I had not thought of: Getting hitched to score an in-state tuition rate.

In states like California, out-of-state students pay as much as $22,000 more each year in tuition than those living in-state. The university system has strict residency rules, but one of the easiest ways to gain in-state status is to get married.

The New York Times reported  that at least nine couples at the University of California, Berkeley, have tied the knot to save an estimated $350,000 in out-of-state tuition. That count includes a student from the Midwest who advertised on Facebook that she was looking for a husband to help her save $20,000 a year in out-of-state tuition.
