UW Dropout Holds Forth:

UPDATE Berkeley just raised its tuition to over  $50,000. How does this affect OUR students?  Read a comment from a UW dropout.  You might also want to click on the tuition tag or privitization tags.

The University of Washington is not aiding in my entrepreneurial endeavors but only detracting from it. The majority of my classes are adding little value to my life and costing me a huge fortune! As an avid reader, I could be learning the material at a reduced cost on my own than from biased professors who teach from a text book they wrote. Each text books costs anywhere from $200-300 dollars. After much research into the costs of printing a textbook, Universities are making a huge markup and are not offering utmost value for high tuition rates. from Arianna O’Dell’s Blog

Arianna’s comment is interesting. She may very well be making the right choice for herself, but it would be a huge mistake to assume that her choice — and her analysis of her UW experience — applies to everyone.

If she wants to be the next Bill Gates, that works for me. But the odds are long that she won’t.

I’m reminded of a story about Mozart: a young student approached The Master and said, “Sir, I’d like to write a symphony, but I’m not really sure how to start. Could you give me some advice?”

Mozart responded, “well, you might want to try writing a few pieces for the piano, then maybe move on to some duets, that sort of thing.”

“But sir, you wrote your first concerto when you were seven years old!” exclaimed the student.

“True enough.” said Mozart, “but I didn’t ask anyone how to do it.”

Maybe a better way of seeing Ms. O’Dell’s complaint is that she does not think UW is an awfully good education for her as an entrepreneur? Maybe she is right. Maybe students like her would get more oout of a more socially active school wihtut classes of 500 to 1000?

Is the UW, with its 210,000,000 stadium, incomprehensible large class sizes, really a good place to learn how to start a business?
