A Response to a comment on Face Book. After Charlie James posted a piece that asserted that Moses and Jesus were “Black,” corrected this and then had the displeasure of an onslaught of racism .. black racism.

You know how much I admire you for your life long efforts at fighting for African Americans. A lot of that has been an effort to seek truth about Africans .. not only about those who came here to be sold, bred, and killed as if they were animals but for the heritage that was lost when these people were stolen from their homes in Africa. The loss to today’s African Americans cannot be measured by the loss all humans have by the erasure by European racists of this great part of human heritage. 
It is all too easy to call these Europeans “White” and to call the Africans “Black.”
It is all too easy to call these Europeans “White” and to call the Africans “Black.” Sadly, those words, used by anyone, have been tainted and have nothing to do with our understanding of the genetics of humans. The words, both of them are racist and little better than the words nigger and honkey. This is why I think it is important to stick with facts .. whether it is a bunch of Euro crackers insisting they are something called Aryan or a clan of African Americans who buy into the European racial construct of a “Black” race .. there simply is no such thing as “race” in science.
As for Mr. John Watson … this fellow seems to buy into really scary fundamentalist Christianity! Is he really a Black man or is he a KKKer with a black avatar?
How can a self professed Black man accept the words of the same “white folks” the Romans .. that wrote the Christian bible? That book was used to justify the conversion of millions of Africans into animals like cows or pigs rather than human beings! No culture other than the one that used that Roman book has ever treated other humans like this. In fact, this horror with the Roman Bible is one reason Malcom X chose to leave Christianity.
As for my own race. I am offended by anyone who wants to call me “white.” I have successfully used threats of law suits to prevent my children being called that and have lost jobs because of a refusal to be called “white.”

It is not that I have anything special against people from the north Caucuses who populated Europe some 9.000 years ago .. .except that my father’s ancestors had already been there for about 30,000 years (the cro magnon in the picture) and my mother’s ancestors did not arrive in Spain until about 6000 years after the Caucasians arrived. So, simply as a matter of science .. I am not “white.”
About 500 years ago these “white folks” drove us out of Spain. That is another reason I refuse that appellation .. I am proud of my people and aware of our faults. Why should I be identified with the the unique culture of Christian Europe that invented the idea that some humans, because of their skin color and features, were not human? MY culture did not buy and sell Mr. Watson’s ancestors as if they were cows or chickens. I also know my father’s family fled Valencia 500 years ago to escape death or forced conversion by those same Caucasians. My Mother’s fled Russia about 100 years ago again to avoid pogroms. The people we fled were the same culture as the “white race” Mr. Watson excoriates. My guess is that Mr. Watson considers Arabs “black.” As a geneticist I consider the Arabs close cousins and as a Jew I am a proud member of Peace Now, the movement for a Palestinian state alongside Israel. I am very proud about why my father’s ancestors achieved in Span even though we were very black skinned .. our family name was actually the Spanish word for “nigger.”
What racists like Mr. Watson cannot understand is that culture is more important than race. He needs to learn from Michael Twitty, an Orthodox Jew who is also an African American. Charlie or Michael Twitty could teach Mr. Watson how much of his own roots were stolen by the slavers .. including people who were as “black” as he is. He also ought to learn to treasure the culture he has inherited. Frankly, I am grateful to folks like Charlie because I have so much to gain from learning the great things of black culture just as I have a lot to be grateful to “white folks” for the shared culture of literature, science and especially free speech.
Oh yeah, my wife and I have reared our kids to hate racism .. whether it comes from self proclaimed White folks like David Duke or Black racists like Farrakhan.
RACISM is a disease and needs to eradicated.

Your condescension with Charlie James was obvious ; He’s a bigger man than that and has had to endure far , far worse , and from a more worthy communicator . First, I am very ticked off by two things. The first is your effort to make my comment about Charlie James an insult. Charlie has a different point of view than I do. He, I think, sees the focus on black as critical to black pride. That is his privilege but let me tell you one thing: In all that I have ever known of him there has NEVER been an effort to diminish other people by THEIR race. That is anything BUT condescension; it is RESPECT.
Second, the rest of your comment is right out of David Duke. He sees something called the “white” race and believes it is superior to other races he creates.
So, YOU have a choice. You want to be a racist? That is up to you. I would rather be a human.
As for how the rest of America sees ME, why is that YOUR issue? I detest the American divide by skin color. And yeah, I have been with Black friends when there have been treated like shit because of their appearance. Is it better to not look Black! You fuckin betcha. Can a “black” person live without being seen this way in America (or anywhere else outside Africa? NO! Anyone who cannot see that is a hypocrite.
As a Jew I admire other Jews who take on a similar challenge by wearing a kippah at all times. I can tell you that has a huge effect on how folks act around me. And yes, I know I can take my “race” off.
As a human, I try to learn from other people’s cultures. That is one reason I hang around with and admire Charlie.
