The 14th Amendment confers citizenship on everyone born in the United States except children of foreign diplomats. Changing that requires amending the Constitution.
Therefore it comes as no surprise that a Seattle-based federal judge issued a preliminary injunction on Thursday, January 23, 205, against Trump’s order purporting to deny citizenship to the U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants.
The lawsuit, brought by the attorney generals of Washington, Oregon, Arizona, and Illinois, was one of several filed in federal courts across the country. Read story here.
The judge, John Coughenour (photo above), is a Republican appointed by Reagan. He previously taught at the University of Washington Law School.
