In his typical all-caps style, Trump posted:
“Unlike the Democrats, who are KILLING SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE by allowing the INVASION OF THE MIGRANTS, I will NOT, under any circumstance, allow either of these two precious GEMS to be even touched under a Trump Administration.”
The reality is opposite: Noncitizen workers must pay Social Security and Medicare taxes, but are ineligible for benefits (read story here). Given the financial strain those programs are under as Baby Boomers retire in large numbers, we should want more, not fewer, migrant workers subsidizing those programs.
It remains to be seen whether Trump will allow Medicare to be “touched;” some Republicans certainly intend to touch it (see my posting here).
Republicans can’t win elections by campaigning on their policies, not least because they’re often are based on outright lies. For example, American consumers and businesses, not China, will pay for the tariffs Trump plans to impose on Chinese imports when he takes office again next week.
They also campaign by demonizing entire groups of people, and lie about them, too. Right now their top target is immigrants, and the GOP claim that Haitian workers in Springfield, Ohio, ate pet dogs and cats is 100% false.
Don’t expect to get a government that works for you by voting for liars. It’s not your nest they plan to feather. They’re not going to the trouble of duping you to make things better for you. Why do so many people have such a hard time figuring this out?
