A freelancer infiltrated the Oath Keepers and a militia group called AP3, attended their meetings, secretly recorded conversations, and rifled through their files.
He found, among other things, they spied on and doxed journalists and discussed assassinating politicians. But civil rights groups and national media organizations ignored him, and he wouldn’t go to police because he didn’t trust the cops.
The Oath Keepers “were frightening, sometimes bumbling, always heavily armed.” If you assumed they’re a bunch of uneducated hillbillies, you’d be wrong; their ranks “included doctors, career cops and government attorneys.” Their friends included sheriffs and politicians.
