A handful of billionaire families did.
The day before the election, MSNBC reported (here), “The top seven donors and their families, including Timothy Mellon, Elon Musk and Miriam Adelson, have donated $818 million almost entirely to help Trump. Without this support, Trump’s cash-strapped campaign would be nearly dead in the water.”
On Election Day, U.S. News reported (here) that banking heir Timothy Mellon (photo, left) was Trump’s biggest 2024 donor, giving $125 million to his super-PAC. But we now know that isn’t true; Elon Musk invested $250 million in Trump’s 2024 campaign. At least four other donors contributed over $100 million each; just 150 families made $2 billion of political donations, with 70% of it going to Republicans, MSNBC says.
Now that the election is over, and Trump won, he’s staffing his cabinet and departments with billionaires, many of whom have massive conflicts of interest (see story here). What the folks who voted for cheaper eggs and gas will get is government of the rich, by the rich, and for the rich. And they should not be surprised if grocery and pump prices go up, not down.
