These GOP senators aren’t fit to govern

Following Trump’s re-election, the GOP is rapidly descending from amoral to depraved.

By now it’s common knowledge that Trump’s attorney general nominee, ex-Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), has shall we say “background check problems.”

Gaetz resigned from Congress a couple days before the House ethics committee was expected to release a report that by all account was going to be scathing. Now, Speaker Mike Johnson is trying to block the release of that report (see story here).

Yesterday, I posted here about America’s dumbest senator, Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), brushing aside his constitutional duty to advise and consent on nominees, and threatening any Republican senator who does so. (Some reportedly have misgivings about confirming Gaetz. This posting isn’t directed at them.)

Today, Sen. Markwayne Mullins (R-OK, photo below) joined the Tuberville parade of blind obeisance to Trump. Daily Show host Jordan Klepper notes that just last year Mullins was complaining about Gaetz boasting of his sexual escapades and showing videos of women he slept with around the halls of Congress, which isn’t exactly a congressman’s function.

But this week Mullin is signaling he’ll vote to confirm Gaetz because he “completely” trusts Trump. Or, as Klepper puts it, “There you have it, folks, Matt Gaetz is a creep who forced me to watch his sex tapes, and yes, I will be voting for him” (see story here).

That isn’t advise and consent, it’s total abdication of Mullin’s constitutional duty, and shows he and Tuberville are unfit to govern as senators. It also reinforces already-strong impressions that the GOP is a cult, not a political party, whose adherents (which include Tuberville and Mullin) are in blind thrall to a leader with sinister intentions.
