Immigrant parents jailed for honor killing attempt

Immigrants typically bring their customs, beliefs, and habits with them.

But when you’re in another country, you’re subject to its laws. Don’t bring drugs with you to Indonesia, or you might get to visit that country’s notorious “Execution Island” (grisly details here).

Honor killings are a cultural practice of some Muslims. The victims typically are women or girls accused of “dishonoring” their families (see article here).

Ihsan Ali, 44, and Zahraa Ali, 40, a married couple, brought the custom to Lacey, Washington, which has landed them in an American jail (see story here). They tried to kill their 17-year-old daughter for spurning an arranged marriage to an older man in Iraq (see story here).

They ambushed her outside the Lacey high school she attends, threw her to the ground, ground her face into the dirt, and set about choking her. They nearly succeeded in killing her before bystanders dragged them off her. In the struggle, her father punched his daughter’s boyfriend.

The boyfriend’s family already had a protection order against the mother for stalking her at their place, and the mother also was banned from the school grounds. Both parents are now charged with attempted murder, attempted kidnapping, domestic violence, burglary, and violating a protection order (see story here).

News reports don’t mention their immigration status, but I’ll bet that will be gone. They’ll probably do U.S. prison time and then be deported, though it’s possible they’ll simply be deported and never allowed back in the U.S.

Something else that’s gone: Their daughter. I strongly suspect they’ll never see her again. Trying to murder your child normally will estrange her forever, especially if she thinks you might try it again. I would guess that emancipates her, too, and she’s now legally an adult and free to make her own decisions under our laws.
