In fact, the second Trump presidency may be for sale; but before I explain that, let’s back up a little.
Last summer Trump decried lobbyists. “You have to stop listening to lobbyists,” he said, “They’re making a lot of money. One way you could stop it is to say if you’re going to go into government, you can never be a lobbyist.”
Trump just hired a lobbyist to be his White House chief of staff. This is the position that controls access to the president, information flow into the Oval Office, and supervises the rest of the White House staff.
She spent years representing tobacco, mining, and landfill companies. A democracy advocate says, “By putting a corporate lobbyist in charge of his administration with his first act as president-elect, Trump is hanging a ‘For Sale’ sign on the front door of the White House” (read story here).
I don’t know about you, but I’ll take a mercenary over an ideologue, especially if you’re talking about Trump. If all he wants is money, then by all means let’s pay him protection money. Let him die a very rich man in exchange for us keeping the America we love.
Sure, it’s not ideal. Nobody likes dealing with the Mafia on their terms. But like the dilemma facing a New York bodega shop owner, it’s better than the alternative.
