As the 2024 campaign approaches a climax, a Trump-affiliated group is sending Arizona senior voters a fraudulent mailer (photo, below) falsely declaring their Medicare benefits were cancelled by Kamala Harris (read story here). Even the stamp on the envelope is fake.
The group behind the flyer (photo, left), MAGA Inc., is a $300 million super-PAC run by former Trump aides and partly funded by rightwing billionaires. The mailer is a typical Republican scare tactic.
Probably a lot of recipients will recognize it as the scam it actually is: To frighten them into voting for a party that opposes Medicare. But it might frighten a few senior voters, and that’s its purpose.
Republicans have a right to do this. The First Amendment protects political lies from government censorship, and the New York v. Sullivan Supreme Court case protects political liars from lawsuits.
But just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should do it. Would you vote for someone this dishonest?
