Washington’s Mt. Adams, rising 12,281 feet above the Columbia River 30 miles away, is rumbling.
Wikipedia says (here), “Seismic activity around Adams is very low and it is one of the quietest volcanoes in Oregon and Washington.” Not anymore. Mt. Adams typically records an earthquake every 2 or 3 years, but no less than 6 were detected in September 2024 (see story here).
The USGS, which published details of the quakes here, said, “This represents the most earthquakes located at Mount Adams in a month since monitoring began in 1982.” That doesn’t mean it will erupt, but indicates magma is moving beneath the mountain.
