Maine and Nebraska split their electoral votes, giving each party an extra electoral vote. Typically Democrats get one from red-state Nebraska, and Republicans get one from blue-state Maine.
In some 2024 election scenarios, a single electoral vote could decide the election. For example, if Harris wins the same states Biden won in 2020 except for Arizona, Georgia and Nevada, without that Nebraska vote she would end up with 269, and the House of Representatives would choose Trump.
Nebraska Republicans tried to pull a fast one. They waited until Maine’s deadline for changing its rule had passed, so that state couldn’t reciprocate, then attempted to change their rule 43 days before the election.
