Reminder to TikTokers: Banks don’t give away money

NBC News reports (here) that, “This weekend a viral trend took over TikTok and X, with users being told that there was a systemwide glitch and that, if they deposited false checks in an ATM and withdrew that money soon afterward, they would be able to cheat the system and take out a large sum of cash before the check bounced.”

Too good to be true? Absolutely. Apparently a “glitch” did occur, and people lined up at ATMs to get “free money,” but the bank says their accounts will be “reviewed” (see story here).

As one TikTok user, who got over a million views, posted: “Chase Bank glitch? No, that’s called fraud. You went to the bank and took $50,000 that didn’t belong to you. That’s not a life hack, that’s called robbery. You’re going to jail. Prison actually.”

If you write a bad check for a large sum, not only will the bank come after you, but so will the police. Whether you do prison time will be up to a judge, but you’ll have a felony conviction on your record, and good luck trying to find another bank willing to have you as a customer.
