A federal grand jury re-indicted Trump on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election (read story here).
Trump is charged with “conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding and conspiracy against rights,” same as the original indictment, but the specifics had to be rewritten because of the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling.
NBC News explained, “While the charges are the same, some of the evidence has been whittled down in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling, which expanded what could be considered official acts.”
This makes two separate grand juries of ordinary citizens who found probable cause that Trump committed crimes. Prosecutors can charge without a grand jury indictment, but a grand jury helps protect defendants from baseless charges and lends credibility to a decision to prosecute.
Trump responded as you’d expect him to:
“Trump blasted the new indictment as ‘shocking’ and ‘a direct attack on democracy’ in a string of social media posts. ‘The case has to do with ‘Conspiracy to Obstruct the 2020 Presidential Election,’ when they are the ones that did the obstructing of the Election, not me,’ he wrote. His campaign also sent out a fundraising email within two hours of the filing, saying Trump was ‘just indicted again’ and urging supporters to ‘stand with Trump’ by donating.”
This is like a thief saying the cops stole your catalytic converter and please send him money to pay his defense lawyers.
