A jury convicted Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), 70, of “bribery, acting as a foreign agent and a slew of other charges,” The Hill reported on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 (read story here). The charges involved, among other things, undisclosed gifts from a donor.
Menendez (photo, left) brushed aside calls from his Democratic colleagues to resign after he was indicted last year, and decided to run for re-election in 2024 as an independent, instead of in the Democratic primary (details here).
New Jersey’s Democratic governor reacted to the guilty verdict by calling for Menendez’s expulsion from the Senate, and several Democratic senators told the media they’ll vote the expel him (see story here).
