Can you guess what Trump’s jury will decide?

I can’t and won’t try.

But the news media are trying. To wit:

“The jury appears to be homing in on the ‘conspiracy’ elements and that’s a disturbing sign for Trump,” one story says (here). “The questions the jury asked Judge Juan Merchan were an ominous sign for the former president,” another says (here). Trump’s lawyers are “preparing for a conviction,” a headline blares (here).

Know what this means? I’ll tell you. News is a business, and journalists make a living by getting readers and audiences. But reading tea leaves doesn’t tell them something nobody knows. Prosecutors and defense lawyers don’t know. Even the jurors won’t know until they agree on a verdict.

Now go watch “Twelve Angry Men” for a tutorial on how jury deliberations work (free video here). And always remember: News is a business, and like any other business, needs customers. If there’s no news, they fill the empty space with opinion and commentary, because a newspaper can’t have blank pages.
