Not Scottie Scheffler (photo below), top-seeded golf champion.
He was released from jail in time to keep playing in the PGA championship in Louisville.
Scheffler was trying to enter the golf course, but police had halted traffic because of a fatal pedestrian accident. So he drove over a curb to get around them, disobeyed an officer’s order to stop, accelerated, and “dragged the officer to the ground,” injuring him (see story here). The officer was hospitalized.
“In one of the strangest scenes ever at a major tournament, Scheffler was taken into custody … [and] charged with felony assault on a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic” and … released to continue playing.
In an earlier posting today (here), I wrote, “Money is power; power brings privilege; and privilege is not having to follow the rules that apply to everyone else.” This seems to apply to prominent athletes and other celebrities, too.
Police usually shoot people who run over them with cars. I wonder how they knew this driver has special privileges. Did they recognize him? I also wonder if he’ll go to prison or get special treatment again when he goes to court on these very serious charges.
