Ed Troyer (photo, left), the elected sheriff of Pierce County, Washington who was acquitted of misdemeanor charges stemming from his encounter with a black newspaper carrier (details here), won’t seek re-election (see story here).
The case of “delivering newspapers while black” received national publicity. Sedrick Altheimer, the carrier, sued the county and received a $500,000 settlement.
Troyer has been with the Pierce County sheriff’s office in various roles since 1985, and was elected sheriff in 2020. The incident involving the newspaper carrier happened in the same month he assumed office.
Troyer was criticized for the incident, and there were calls for him to resign and talk of a recall campaign (see story here). With his decision to step down, the saga is finally coming to an end.
