The leaders of a North Carolina church refused to say the Capitol riot was wrong, and parishioners are walking out.
As Raw Story reported here, “Asked by the church elders to provide a statement on the riot, Pastor Jay Thomas, wrote ” … the details of the election, how to interpret the details and meaning of the raid on the Capitol, and the like, are not so clear and straight-lined from Scripture that this is the moment to say A is right and B is wrong, or vice-versa.'”
The story continues, “That has led to the departures of many families of all races who complained of the church leadership’s lack of transparency and care.” And I don’t blame them one bit. If a pastor can’t see the wrong of rioting, assaulting police officers, and threatening the lives of elected officials, as part of an attempt to violently overthrow our democracy, then he’s no authority on Scripture.
But the problems at that church go deeper. Many of those who left were minorities, especially Asian, and they accuse the church leaders of racism. I’m inclined to accuse it of not being a church at all, but rather a club for white Trumpers, which probably what it really is in essence.
