“I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”
Those are words from Elie Wiesel’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech. Wiesel (bio here) was a Holocaust survivor and advocate for victims of oppression.
A Pennsylvania public school district notorious for its anti-LGBQT policies ordered a school librarian to remove posters of Wiesel quotes because they’re “political,” and the librarian was threatened with personnel action if he didn’t comply (see story here). The school board is dominated by rightwing fanatics.
The poster was allowed after a community uproar over its removal.
