I don’t know if they’re serious or not, but North Dakota GOP legislators are pushing a bill that would impose a $1,500 fine on anyone “involved in an organization that receives state funding, including public schools,” who uses a pronoun different from their birth gender (see story here).
This is, of course, anti-transgender bullying. An opponent responded, “I see no way this law would pass any sort of legal challenge based on basic legal construction principles. It’s vague, fails to advance any legitimate state interests, and not only would cause impermissible, gender-based discrimination, its very purpose is gender-based discrimination.”
Funny she didn’t mention it also violates the free speech clause of the First Amendment. This is (still, for now) a free country, and you can call yourself anything you want to. You can also call the bill’s sponsor, and any legislator who supports it, anything you want to.
