George Santos (R-NY), who won a House seat last month, admitted Monday to lying about his biography.
He didn’t just lie; he spewed whoppers (see my posting here).
But on Monday he “claimed that he hasn’t committed any crimes and intends to serve in Congress,” CNN reported (here).
He said, “I am not a criminal. Not here, not abroad, in any jurisdiction in the world have I ever committed any crimes.” That misses the point, which is that nobody will trust him.
Also, we already have enough ethically-challenged Republicans in Congress.
He should’ve stopped there, but didn’t, adding, “To get down to the nit and gritty, I’m not a fraud.” Like hell he isn’t. “I’m not a criminal who defrauded the entire country and made up this fictional character and ran for Congress,” he continued. Only the “not criminal” part is true.
“I’m not going to make excuses for this,” he said in his next breath after excusing it. Now get a load of this: “I never claimed to be Jewish. … Because I learned my maternal family had a Jewish background I said I was ‘Jew-ish.’” Oh-kaaay …
And being a Republican, he attacked the media, claiming they “nitpicked at me” and calling reporting on his lies “slander” (see story here).
CNN said it “has reached out to House GOP leadership and the National Republican Congressional Committee in the wake of Santos’ admissions.” Don’t hold your breath. The GOP party and congressional leaders defended a notorious liar for four years. They’re liars themselves. The GOP is the Party of Lies, and that’s probably why Santos thought he could get away with it.
They could refuse to seat him. They have the votes to do that. But they won’t. Why would they, when he’s so much like them?
