Let’s skip their baseless election fraud claims, QAnon silliness, etc., and look at a concrete example of why nobody takes Republicans seriously anymore.
CNN reported (here) on December 21, 2022, that “House Republicans on Wednesday released a report focused on security failures at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, highlighting well-documented breakdowns in intelligence sharing, Capitol security and coordination between various law enforcement agencies that responded that day.
The story continues, “Their primary recommendation centers around reforming the US Capitol Police Board and bolstering congressional oversight of the Capitol Police force – two issues that were identified by lawmakers of both parties in the wake of the January 6 attack.”
That’s fine, as far as it goes, which isn’t very far at all. CNN then added,
“But the GOP report is silent on other efforts to disrupt the transfer of presidential power after the 2020 election and selective in its criticism of political leaders and their culpability in the security breakdowns on January 6. The report resurfaces largely unfounded allegations to cast blame on Democrats like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi while glossing over former President Donald Trump’s own role.”
In other words, they still don’t want to talk about the violent attempt to overthrow our democracy. And remember, Republicans tried to block the real House investigation of the Jan. 6 insurrection, and have spent nearly two years dismissing the rioters as “tourists,” or falsely calling them “antifa,” or arguing the riot was an “FBI false flag” operation. Garbage, all of it.
This “report” is just another wretched attempt to whitewash their supporters’ criminal behavior, shift blame, and dodge responsibility — and a thinly-veiled effort to blame their acts of violence on the police. Give me a break.
