A story in the Spokane Spokesman-Review in July 2020 reported (here),
“In a long-running lawsuit, a woman accuses police and deputies in Ferry County of failing to properly investigate when she reported a pattern of rape and molestation spanning 12 years of her childhood. Among the defendants is Loren Culp, who is now the police chief in the town of Republic and a Republican candidate for Washington governor. The lawsuit alleges Culp and two other law enforcement officers intimidated the victim, threatened to charge her with making false claims and failed to report her allegations to child welfare authorities as required by law.”
Man, has a tsunami of water flowed under the bridge since then. Culp, who rocketed to rightwing stardom by refusing to enforce a gun safety law, won the 2020 GOP nomination for governor, but was crushed in the November election, 56.6% to 43.1% (see results here). Despite losing by over 500,000 votes, Culp filed a lawsuit against the Republican secretary of state claiming election fraud, but backed down when threatened with Rule 11 sanctions (see story here).
Under Civil Rule 11 of the Court Rules, a judge can require a plaintiff to pay defense costs, including attorney fees, when a lawsuit is frivolous. We’re talking here about more money than Culp will ever have.
But this didn’t end Culp’s political mishaps. He ran again in 2022, this time for Congress, and lost in the primary (see results here.) Maybe it’s time for him to give up politics, not only for society’s sake, but his own as well. He should’ve taken the deputy job offered him by the Ferry County sheriff after Republic disbanded its 1-man police force (perhaps not least because Culp was getting the town sued; more about that below).
Famous as he is as the political gadfly against whom other wannabes will now be measured, Culp’s greatest notoriety derives from his crooked police dog, who alerted on 100% of vehicles regardless of whether drugs were present, a quirk that got Culp sued by one of the dog’s victims. But that’s not all. He also was sued by for bungling a child sex exploitation investigation by blaming the victim. That case just settled out of court (see details below).
Loren Culp is incompetent at everything he’s tried so far. He shouldn’t be elected to anything, and any police agency that employs him is sticking its financial neck out. We’ve got to find some other employment for this man. But don’t, for pets’ sake, let him run a dog kennel or animal shelter. He’d turn all the dogs and cats into perjurers and thieves.
